I get this from my old maintenance buddies, “So now that you are a big artificial intelligence and machine learning guy, how do you feel knowing that you are eliminating jobs?” I tell them that yes absolutely it will eliminate an estimated 1.8 million U.S. jobs in 2020 and 2021 and this is very scary for a lot of people. But I go on and explain to them that it will create 2.3 million jobs, and that’s an increase of a half a million new jobs.
That bump in employment opportunities is why I preach to them all the time and encourage them to get out there and learn about this and get a little bit of education on the technology that’s on its way. You don’t have to be a “brainy-ack” about it, you just need to understand how it works and qualify yourself for the next job.
Look people it’s coming, it’s going to happen either get with the program or you will be left behind. With industry 4.0 in its infancy, now is the time to act. Operations and plants m
ay be tempted to wait on the sidelines until solution winners and losers can be identified but this is a very bad idea because the risk of NOT pursuing this is far greater than the risk of waiting. This is why I started my consulting services. To help companies move in a positive direction.
There are no cookie cutter programs out there that fits all and if someone tells you that there is, walk away and fast. Every company’s need is different and must be addressed in a systematic way that works for them. But the first step is, take that first step and soon or you won’t be around to take any steps. Because it is not the big fish that eats the little fish anymore, it’s the fast fish that eats the slow fish.
Remember the movie, “What About Bob?” What was the takeaway there? Baby steps, right? Stop thinking that you must completely go end to end in your operations with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Human to Machine Interface or Edge Computing, just don’t wait to start. In the end what really matters is that you do start and from there continuously improve. I have one word for all the slow fish, “Gulp.”
